Introduction

Code Vein is an action RPG developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, released in 2019. It takes inspiration from the Souls-like formula while incorporating its own identity through an anime aesthetic, deep character customization, and a strong emphasis on narrative. Unlike its inspirations, Code Vein introduces AI companions, a flexible class system, and a more cinematic approach to storytelling.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monstrous creatures known as the Lost, the game follows a group of Revenants—undead warriors who survive by consuming blood—on their quest to uncover the truth behind the catastrophe that reshaped civilization. With an intricate story, high-speed combat, and a rich RPG system, Code Vein offers a unique alternative for players seeking a more accessible yet still challenging take on the Souls-like genre.

Story

The world of Code Vein is one of ruin and despair. Following a mysterious calamity, society has crumbled, leaving only the Revenants—enhanced but cursed beings who depend on blood to retain their sanity. Those who succumb to their thirst become the Lost, monstrous creatures that roam the wasteland.

The protagonist, a nameless Revenant suffering from amnesia, is thrust into this dying world with no memory of their past. Guided by a mysterious girl named Io, they soon discover that they possess unique abilities that allow them to restore Vestiges—crystallized fragments of lost memories. As they journey through the ruined cityscapes and hidden underground facilities, they uncover the tragic histories of their companions and the horrifying secrets behind the Revenant experiment.

One of Code Vein’s greatest strengths is its emphasis on character-driven storytelling. Unlike traditional Souls-like games, where lore is often cryptic and requires deep exploration to understand, Code Vein presents a more structured and emotional narrative. Companions have their own personal struggles, regrets, and motivations, and their stories are revealed through optional cutscenes and Vestige restorations.

The game explores themes of identity, sacrifice, and the struggle for survival, with a heavy focus on the bonds between characters. The world-building is rich, detailing the origins of Revenants, the power struggles between factions, and the moral dilemmas of their existence. While the anime aesthetic may not appeal to all players, the emotional weight of the story sets Code Vein apart from its Souls-like counterparts.

Gameplay

At its core, Code Vein follows the familiar Souls-like structure: stamina-based combat, challenging enemy encounters, and a world filled with secrets. However, it introduces several mechanics that give it a distinct identity and a more flexible approach to progression.

Blood Code System

The most unique aspect of Code Vein is the Blood Code system, which allows players to switch between different combat classes at any time. Each Blood Code determines the player's base stats, passive bonuses, and available Gifts—special abilities that range from buffs to powerful attacks. This flexibility encourages players to experiment and adapt their playstyle depending on the situation.

Rather than being locked into a single class, players can acquire and upgrade new Blood Codes throughout the game. These include:

  • Fighter (Melee-focused, high strength, and stamina)
  • Ranger (Ranged combat and mobility-based skills)
  • Caster (Powerful magic-based attacks and buffs)
  • Berserker (Heavy weapons and high damage resistance)

Each Blood Code can be enhanced with new abilities, encouraging experimentation. Unlike traditional RPGs, where class choices are permanent, Code Vein allows players to seamlessly switch between builds, making combat feel more dynamic.

AI Companions

Unlike many Souls-like games, Code Vein allows players to bring an AI companion into battle. These allies are more than just NPCs—they have their own unique abilities, fighting styles, and personalities. Each companion offers different support functions, such as healing, ranged attacks, or tanking enemies, making strategic team composition an important part of gameplay.

The AI is surprisingly competent, helping to balance difficulty without making the game too easy. Companions can revive the player, provide buffs, and act as a distraction during boss fights. This feature makes Code Vein more accessible to newcomers while still offering a challenge to veteran players who choose to play solo.

Combat Mechanics

The combat in Code Vein is fast-paced and responsive, blending the deliberate pacing of Dark Souls with the flashy style of action RPGs like God Eater and Devil May Cry.

The game features a wide variety of weapons, each with distinct move sets and attack speeds:

  • Swords (Balanced and versatile)
  • Halberds (Fast, multi-hit combos)
  • Great Hammers (Slow but devastating attacks)
  • Bayonets (Ranged attacks mixed with melee strikes)

Dodging, parrying, and using Gifts effectively is crucial, especially against the game’s formidable bosses. Many enemies require precise timing and adaptability, making encounters feel rewarding.

Graphics & Art Style

Visually, Code Vein embraces an anime-inspired aesthetic with high-quality character models and detailed environments. The character creation system is one of the most extensive in any RPG, allowing players to customize their protagonist with a wide range of hairstyles, accessories, and outfits.

The enemy designs are grotesque and menacing, enhancing the dark atmosphere. However, while character models are well-crafted, some environments can feel repetitive. Certain areas lack variety in texture and layout, making exploration less engaging than in other Souls-like titles.

Sound & Music

The soundtrack of Code Vein is composed of melancholic piano pieces, intense orchestral battle themes, and eerie ambient tracks that enhance the atmosphere. The boss music is particularly outstanding, adding tension and drama to major encounters.

Voice acting is available in both English and Japanese, with strong performances that bring the characters to life. The environmental sound design also adds to the immersion, reinforcing the desolate tone of the world.

Despite not being officially Steam Deck verified, Code Vein runs well on the device with minor adjustments.

   Optimized Settings for Steam Deck:

  • Resolution: 1280x800 (native Steam Deck resolution)
  • Frame Rate Limit: 40-60 FPS (stable with adjustments)
  • Shadows & Effects: Medium (higher settings cause FPS drops)
  • Anti-Aliasing: FXAA (reduces jagged edges without heavy performance cost)
  • Battery Life: Moderate (around 2.5-3 hours)

Overall, Code Vein remains a solid option for portable gaming, offering a smooth and enjoyable experience on the Steam Deck.
