Spinch

Spinch

Remember those fever dreams you had as a kid? The ones where colors melted into shapes, and nothing quite made sense, but it all felt strangely right? That's Spinch in a nutshell. This mind-bending platformer from Queen Bee Games and publisher Akupara Games is what you'd get if you threw Super Meat Boy into a blender with Yellow Submarine and a handful of rainbow-colored paint tubes.

Let's get one thing straight: Spinch isn't your typical platformer. You play as a white, blob-like creature (the titular Spinch) on a mission to rescue your missing babies from a world that seems designed by someone who ate too many magic mushrooms. And I mean that in the best possible way haha

The first thing that hits you is the art style. Canadian artist Jesse Jacobs has created something that feels both alien and familiar, like stumbling into a child's coloring book that's gained sentience. The visuals pulse with life – geometric patterns twist and morph, rainbow-hued enemies bounce and wiggle across the screen, and backgrounds shift in ways that make you question whether you're actually playing a game or having an out-of-body experience.

But don't let the trippy visuals fool you – underneath its psychedelic skin, Spinch is a precision platformer that demands your full attention. The controls are tight and responsive, which is crucial because you'll need every ounce of accuracy to navigate through the increasingly challenging levels. Your little white protagonist can run, jump, and wall-jump with the best of them, and you'll use these abilities constantly as you bounce between platforms, dodge technicolor threats, and collect your scattered offspring.

The game's structure is straightforward – clear levels, collect babies, beat bosses, repeat – but the execution is anything but. Each stage feels like a new experiment in controlled chaos. You might start a level thinking you've got it figured out, only to have the game throw a curveball that forces you to rethink your approach. There are rainbow-spewing creatures that turn platforms into death traps, geometric shapes that phase in and out of existence, and boss battles that feel like fighting a Lisa Frank design gone rogue. The bosses, in particular, are a highlight – massive, screen-filling creatures that require both quick reflexes and pattern recognition to defeat.

The difficulty curve is masterfully crafted. Early levels ease you into the basics, but by the time you hit world three, you'll be chain-jumping through obstacle courses that would make Mario break out in a cold sweat. Deaths are frequent but never frustrating, thanks to instant respawns and well-placed checkpoints. It's the kind of game that makes you say "just one more try" about fifty times in a row

The more you play the more you realise how difficult this game is, on the surface it seems like a very cutesy experience how could it have even seasoned gamers begging for mercy I would not give a child this game unless you are ready to hear babies first swear despite the child like appeal however to an older child audience this might be a good game to introduce them to the whole rage game concept without fully traumatising them.

It's consistently surprising without ever feeling unfair. At around 4-6 hours for a first playthrough (longer if you're aiming for 100% completion), Spinch is neither too long nor too short. It's just enough time to take you on a journey through its bizarre world without overstaying its welcome. And once you've finished it, you might find yourself coming back just to experience certain levels again, like revisiting a particularly memorable dream..
