Game Review: Othercide

Score: 8.5/10

As a lover of indie games that push the boundaries of storytelling and visual aesthetics, I was immediately drawn to "Othercide." Developed by Lightbulb Crew, this tactical RPG combines turn-based strategy with a hauntingly beautiful art style, and I couldn’t resist diving into its dark, twisted world.

Gameplay (9/10)

From the moment I booted up the game, I was met with a strategic challenge that felt fresh and engaging. The combat in "Othercide" is tactical and layered, revolving around managing my units—known as Daughters—and their skills. Each Daughter has unique abilities and traits, which I found crucial for forming effective teams. The challenge escalates quickly; I appreciated how the game skillfully forces you to adapt and rethink your strategies with every encounter.

The "Timeline" system is a standout feature that caught my attention. This mechanic allows you to manipulate turn order, giving you the ability to interrupt enemies or execute a perfect combo at crucial moments. The strategic depth here offers a satisfying layer of complexity that kept me on my toes throughout my journey.

However, I did find myself occasionally dealing with some frustrating RNG moments, where critical hits can swing a battle in an unpredictable direction. While this can make for a thrilling experience, it also feels a tad punishing at times, especially during intense late-game battles.

Presentation (10/10)

Let's talk about the art and music, which truly elevate "Othercide" to new heights. The monochrome aesthetic, accented by splashes of red, creates a wonderfully eerie atmosphere that’s nothing short of mesmerizing. Each character design and environment is crafted with meticulous detail, making the world feel alive and deeply immersive.

The sound design deserves special mention as well. The haunting score refrains underscore the intense and desperate nature of the game. It's the kind of soundscape that fully envelops you, making even the most mundane actions feel critical within the game’s narrative. I found myself getting lost in the atmosphere, and that rare synergy between visuals and sound is something I greatly treasure.

The art is superb!

Narrative (8/10)

The narrative of "Othercide" is as dark and twisted as its world. Set in a nightmarish reality where humanity faces horrific monolith-like creatures, the story is both intriguing and deeply emotional. I appreciated how the game weaves themes of sacrifice, loss, and purpose into its storytelling. The way the Daughters embody echoes of the past and their struggle against fate adds a thought-provoking layer.

However, while the overall narrative is compelling, certain aspects felt a bit convoluted at times. There were moments when I had to piece together the story fragments, and I would have appreciated a bit more clarity or context in some areas.

Scary!

Replayability (7/10)

"Othercide" also offers a decent amount of replayability. The game's permadeath mechanics make each playthrough unique, as losing Daughters alters your strategies significantly. Additionally, the different endings provide an incentive to tackle the game multiple times. That said, the core gameplay loop, while addictive, can feel a bit repetitive if played back-to-back without breaks.

Final Thoughts

In summary, "Othercide" is an atmospheric, strategic experience that left a lasting impression on me. The blend of tactical depth, stunning visuals, and a haunting narrative creates an unforgettable ride through a beautifully dark world. With some minor frustrations and story clarity issues, it's not without its flaws, but the strengths far outweigh them. If you're seeking a game that elegantly combines turn-based strategy with a profound emotional core, look no further than "Othercide."

In the end, I can confidently say this game is a must-try for both strategy enthusiasts and those who appreciate artistry in gaming.
