Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Battle your favorite characters in chaotic cartoon fun!

Review of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Being an ardent player of fighting games and a fan of Nickelodeon, my expectations were high for "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl." This whole notion of having a good old time fighting with cherished characters like SpongeBob, the Ninja Turtles, and other Nickelodeon greats is just pure ecstasy. Sadly, the game has its moments, but it fails miserably in a variety of places, leaving the feeling of melancholy to loom over my experience. This is my evaluation of the game:

Gameplay: 6/10
The mechanics of "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl" are quite simple and accessible for new players to dive right in. The controls are very responsive and I enjoyed the fast-paced play. However, compared to other platform fighters, such as Smash Bros, this game feels lacking. The combo system can also feel limited at times and while every character has a different playstyle, it seems that the elements lack finesse and intricacies that would keep a veteran player attached to it. It's good fun for a quick match, but it doesn't have the same replayability when it comes to competitive play.

Graphics: 6/10
Visually, the game presents a charming aesthetic that draws reference from the original animated series. The character designs are colorful and recognizable, but the backgrounds render an impression of genericness, feeling somewhat underwhelming in detail. The graphics of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, compared to other fighting games being released around the same period, would hardly be regarded as impressive. Yet the graphics render it to be neither an ugly game, nor does it look like a triple-A title. It appears more aged and polished like an indie title.

Sound Design: 5/10
Definitely nostalgic in terms of sound effects and voice clips, thus a plus! Sadly, background music is pretty forgettable. Some voices sound nice, while others feel slightly weird or simply seem pretty repetitive, which could take its toll on the whole experience. Compared to some of the more vibrant and catchy themes presented in brawlers, the background music just doesn't cut it for me.

Character Roster: 7/10
Certainly one of the game's biggest plusses! From characters spanning decades of Nickelodeon shows, there is something here for every fan. The excitement that Aang and Korra bring to things, as does nostalgia-laden CatDog. So there could be some being left out that could elicit some protest from fans. However, the roster is balanced enough that each character has something to offer to the different styles of gameplay.

Multiplayer Experience: 6/10
The real fun of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is playing with friends locally. Multiplayer is uncomplicated and fun. The online games, however, are hit-or-miss. I experienced some lag during a couple of matches, which is devastating for a competitive fighting game that relies heavily on timing. It should be cool for casuals with friends, but competitively online, the game will falter slightly compared to other heavyweights like Smash or Brawlhalla.

Final Thoughts
In summary, although "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl" is a great attempt at cashing in on some serious nostalgia and providing a fun brawler experience, it feels like a lukewarm imitation rather than a heavyweight title in the fighting genre. It has its fun moments and is worth a play for Nickelodeon fans, but maybe not enough weight for the hardcore.

If you're looking for a casual journey filled with sweet nostalgia and charm with your favorite characters, give it a go. You might want to put off anything significant in terms of competition against the giants of the platform fighting genre.
