The colors and art style are super nice and cozy

All right, find a cozy place to get settled and fill a cup with tea-or, you know, a digital one because we're talking over a computer-and let us venture into discussing My Time At Portia. It has completely stolen my heart, and I am here to give you all the cozy details!

My heart was won at the instant in which I set foot on the dusty docks of Portia after stepping off the boat. You, beloved player, inherit your Pa's workshop, and your mission is straightforward: establish your name, fix the broken-down workshop, and perhaps find a little romance along the way. And the 'maybe' part sure is tempting!

The Good Stuff (aka, the "Why I'm Obsessed" section):

  • Gameplay Loop That Feels Like a Warm Hug (9.5/10): Gameplay is just incredible. If you think gathering resources, making tools, building machines, fulfilling commissions for the townsfolk, and slowly transforming your workshop into a productivity powerhouse is fun then hold on tight! There's an actual feeling of progression reflected in unlocking new blueprints, discovering new areas, and witnessing construction activity within one's own town. The loop of "gather, build, enhance" is pure dopamine.
  • The Characters (9/10): Oh, the characters! Portia teems with an offbeat yet lovable cast. From the always-cheerful Ginger to the grumpy yet secretly sweet Gust, they all have their daily routines, personalities, and stories. I honestly started to care for them and look forward to the daily meet-and-greets, quests, and little festivals. Knowing the characters, gifting them, even romancing certain characters? Chef's kiss!
  • The World and Its Secrets (9/10): The world of Portia is unexpectedly vast and intricate. There are ruins and dungeons to explore, with secret areas to find. The environments are incredibly good, beautifully designed, and they all seem alive with activity. There is always something new to find, and the sense of adventure kept me glued to the screen for hours upon hours.
  • Crafting and Building (9/10): This is where the game shines. A deep crafting system where rewards come from it. You create everything from basic tools to advanced machines. I especially liked that you could decorate your shop and grow your abode. It was unbelievably gratifying making my workshop, creating a warm bedroom with beautiful furniture.
  • The Combat (7.5/10): Okay, combat wasn't the focus here, but it is decent enough. You'll fight beasts in the ruins and dungeons with different kinds of weapons and skills. Not mind-blowing, but enjoyable in its own right, and in keeping with the general theme of the game. Some of the enemies are really cool-looking!

The "Could Be Better" (but still, I love it!) Section:

  • Performance (7/10): On my setup (and, from what I've heard, on others as well) the game can sometimes have performance hiccups, particularly in larger towns or during resource-intensive tasks. It's not game-breaking, but it can occasionally break the flow a little.
  • The Story (7.5/10): The main story is compelling in its own right, revolving around the mystery of the "abandoned World." It's an interesting enough narrative that can capture your attention. The pacing could be slightly uneven at certain points.
  • Repetitive Quests (7/10): There are some quests that feel a little samey over time. Lots of running around, fetching items. Not a deal-breaker, but some variety here would have been welcome.

Comparisons:

  • If you have ever played Stardew Valley, then you will feel this game is quite similar; however, this game focuses more on building and crafting. You farm, but that isn't the main goal. There is much more of an emphasis on crafting, automating, and upgrading your workshop. The gameplay is also a bit deeper in terms of fighting.
  • I picked up Animal Crossing vibes but with a little more depth in crafting and story. The avatars are cute, the world is cute, and the town festivals give that familiar cozy feeling.

Overall Score: 9/10

Final Verdict: My Time At Portia is a truly special game. It's the perfect blend of crafting, building, exploration, and social interaction. If you're looking for a cozy, immersive experience that will keep you occupied for hours on end, look no further. Despite a few minor flaws, the game's charm and addictive gameplay loop more than make up for it. I highly recommend it, especially if you like games that let you build your own little world and make friends along the way. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some refining to do and someone to woo!
