Lost Eidolons

Poor story, bad voices: tactical RPG's lost potential.

The graphics is really good, but...

This game sat in my wishlist for quite a while, I was so excited when i finally grabbed a copy and started to play, but I was completely disappointed. As someone who really values the story and character development of a game, this game really did not hit the mark for me.

Here's my assessment of Lost Eidolons. My analysis is purely objective.

man
The character designs are really good.

Overall Impression:

Lost Eidolons is a tactical turn-based RPG. It contains a grid field of battle, character builds, and political intrigue with a plot. The game does have polish, though there is some disappointing overall execution.

Graphics: Score - 7/10

The graphics are undoubtedly the strongest point of Lost Eidolons. Character models are detailed, and environments look nice. The art style is largely consistent and helps create a nice visual experience. Lighting and effects are of acceptable quality. In some parts, like some character animations, there's a lesser polished feel than in others. Still, overall, the graphical presentation is done well and is the best part of the game.

Gameplay: Score - 6/10

The core gameplay loop of Lost Eidolons revolves around tactical combat. Players control a squad of characters, each with unique abilities and classes. The combat system involves positioning, flanking, and utilizing terrain for tactical advantage. The mechanics are relatively standard for the genre, and the game is adequately functional in this regard. Progression and character customization are present, allowing for some player agency in developing their squad. The game is, however, guilty of being slow at times.

The turn-based combat can become repetitive, with each encounter often playing out in a similar fashion. The UI, while functional, is not particularly user-friendly. Some actions take longer than is necessary. Certain combat scenarios do not seem well-balanced, leading to frustration.

Cut-in animations are cool, but gets stale after a while

Story: Score - 6/10

The story of Lost Eidolons follows a narrative of political unrest and rebellion. The plot introduces a cast of characters, with the player character's experiences and the stories of the people around him forming the core of the game's content. The themes are not particularly original, but serviceable. Some of the plot points are predictable. The story is decent and does enough to move the game along.

Voice Acting: Score - 2/10

The voice acting is, bluntly, really bad. The acting is utterly emotionless and delivery sounds forced and awkward. The voice actors frequently have difficulty expressing the desired tone or purpose of the words. This deficiency detracts from the story and makes it harder to become interested in the plot.

Characters: Score - 5/10

The characters are functional, but they fail to connect with the player. There are no characters that stand out. Each has a specific role to play in the story, but the emotionless deliveries in the voice acting make it difficult to care about them.

no voice
Disabling voices actually makes the game better.

Sound Design: Score - 5/10

The soundtrack is appropriately thematic but not particularly memorable. The sound effects are functional, but not particularly striking. There is nothing overly offensive with the sounds, though nothing remarkable.

Overall Score: 5/10

Final Verdict:

Lost Eidolons presents a reasonably competent, if somewhat uninspired, tactical RPG experience. Its strong visual presentation is let down by weak voice acting and gameplay that tends to be slow and, at times, unbalanced. While the core gameplay and story are functional, the overall product falls short of the standards expected by the genre.
