Children of Morta

Unite the family, conquer darkness.

Game Review: Children of Morta
Score: 8/10 ๐ŸŒŸ

In the pixel world of Children of Morta, I was still catching my breath when I began admiring its art style and the storyline that comes straight from the heart. This dual-action RPG with a story about family at its core hits many notes for me!

Graphics: 9/10 ๐ŸŽจ
First, what do I say about the gorgeous pixel art? Each setting is filled with an abundance of love, color, and life; it is almost a miniature world in itself. Animations are smooth, and there is unique character design and good aesthetics. I found myself often stopping just to soak in the scenery!

Gameplay: 8/10 ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ
The gameplay itself is somewhere between hack-and-slash and rogue-lite. I quite liked the combat, which felt very fluid and responsive. There is plenty of variety in different play styles thanks to family members' different skills and abilities. The dungeons are procedurally generated, which kept things interesting. However, I at times noticed a certain pattern in the attacks of enemies, which kind of made the encounters a bit predictable.

Story: 8/10 ๐Ÿ“–
The story follows the Bergson family, protectors of Mount Morta, and is genuinely heartwarming to the core. The narrative is very well integrated into the gameplay, with each family member's struggle adding to the depth of the overall lore. Ruthless artistry in game storytelling is simple yet touching about the concept of family and the value of courage in itself.

Sound: 7/10 ๐ŸŽถ
The music is nice and matches the vibe of the game, but it wasn't as outstanding as I was anticipating. The sound effects work just fine; however, I wouldn't have minded a bit of variation for further immersion.

Replayability: 8/10 ๐Ÿ”
Character unlocking and upgrades would draw the player back into the game for multiple runs. The procedurally generated dungeons kept things fresh; still, some minor repetitive tendencies began to show after a few runs. I was motivated to try out different strategies and build combinations of family members.

Co-op Experience: 9/10 ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ
Having a friend along made everything so much more fun. The collaboration and synergy between the characters were captivating and turned hollow moments into everlasting ones. Couch co-op is a wonderful addition to a game that truly deserves it!

Final Thoughts:
An emotive, beautifully-made action RPG, Children of Morta combines gameplay and narrative perfectly. It does get bogged down by relatively few things, such as repetitive layouts and the audio itself, but otherwise, it is a nice and heartwarming experience. Playing cooperatively is just the cherry on top, making it all the more wonderful to share this journey with a friend. Anyone searching for a pleasant experience with an in-depth storyline and engaging gameplay is highly urged to play!
