Batman: Arkham City - Game of the Year Edition Review

Score: 9.5/10

Graphics: 9/10

And as I dived deep down into Arkham City, shadows took away my breath with their hauntingly beautiful visuals. The Gotham canvas opened up full of sinister and crumbling buildings draped in shadows to be lit at times by the flickering glow of streetlights. The character models are extraordinary: each furrow on the face of Bruce Wayne and each scar on the Joker's manically grinning face tell tales of suffering and chaos. It's a little dated at times, one of those reminders that age is an unforgiving mark, but while the scuffs show, the game still wears its age gracefully.

The Joker, still crazy

Story: 10/10

At the mouth of the cold shroud was the narrative that dragged me deeper still into its harrowing tale. In a sprawling domain of criminal elite, I felt that Gotham heavy in the brightening of a deplorable scheme the Hugo Strange had lined up. Each curve and revelation sends shivers down my spine, departing my hunger to discover the secrets behind these concrete walls. Voice acting has been nothing short of stellar, bringing characters to life that I somehow felt were both familiar and feared. A story that dives into the root of darkness captures, in haunting simplicity, the essence of Batman's unyielding pursuit of justice.

Gameplay: 9/10

I became a predator stalking its prey in the moonlight-roofed heavens, using a dangerously seamless mixture of stealth, combat, and gadgetry. The combat system is still fluid and visceral, allowing me to unleash my inner Dark Knight with satisfying punches and counterattacks. However, I did stumble upon moments where the AI felt a tad predictable, diminishing the thrill of the hunt. There are just so many side missions and secrets, it really managed to keep me busy and from the main story, into the dark alleys where Gotham's rogues lurk with sinister anticipation.

Sound: 9.5/10

I guess that's the sound design for one haunting soundtrack to my adventures. Tracers of footsteps on rainwashed streets, wails from the wretched of the world's highest, all fill the air with terror. The swell and recede of music were like a heartbeat, perfectly controlling every up and down pulse in the game. Each encounter was underscored by a deeply immersive score that increased the stakes in every fight and stealth segment. But the occasional sound glitches took me out of my dark reverie a bit, but quickly the deep richness of the overall audio experience pulled me back in.

Harvey Dent... also crazy!

Replayability: 8/10

A large expanse of Gotham city is filled with secrets, from secret trophies to challenging predator missions. He might have a tight storyline, but the side quests aren't as appealing as the main quest that draws me into doing them anyway. With a New Game Plus available, exploring it further isn't out of the question. However, the replay value slowly faded as I began to retrace my steps through the blood-soaked streets of Arkham again.

Overall Impression: 9.5/10
