I am Bread

A Bizarre and Hilarious Breadventure

Gameplay – 7.5/10

I Am Bread is an adventure game based on physics where players control a slice of bread whose sole goal is to become toast. Each level has its own set of unique environments, some filled with everyday obstacles like dirty floors, moving fans, appliances, and even pets. Clumsy but deliberate control movements need to be performed to move the bread from its starting position into a source of heat: a toaster, stove, or even a sun-enlightened windowsill.

We made the controls purposely strange because the players are supposed to grip surfaces with different corners of the bread, which creates a rather comical, frustrating, but surprisingly strategic movement experience. It requires patience and precision because touching dirty surfaces will lower an "edibility" meter, which will eventually fail the level if the bread gets too dirty.

Besides the regular story mode, there are also some side modes where you can become a baguette and cause havoc (Rampage Mode), roll as a bagel (Bagel Race), and fight for survival as a fragile cracker. These innovations add a little variety while keeping the core gameplay challenging.

Graphics & Art Style – 7/10

The visuals are simple yet effective, with a cartoonish but realistic style that makes household objects and environments feel authentic. The way bread physics interact with objects adds to the humor and absurdity of the game. While it doesn’t have the most detailed graphics, the polished animations and destructible environments help bring the chaos to life.

Sound & Music – 8/10

The sound design enhances the wacky atmosphere, with satisfying crunches, squishy movements, and environmental sounds that react dynamically to the bread’s movements. The light, playful soundtrack complements the game’s goofy premise without being distracting.

Story & Atmosphere – 7.5/10

Surprisingly, I Am Bread has a rather intriguing narrative thread. The game is presented as the delusions of a therapeutic patient, offering much psychological intrigue against absurd gameplay. Through temporary notes and advancing levels, the game allows the player to discover the weird links to Surgeon Simulator (also made by the developers).

The atmosphere is lighthearted and all weird at the same time, balancing comedy with an unusual sense of purpose.

Replayability – 7/10

It's quite replayable with numerous game modes and the total randomness in the gameplay using physics. Trying to perfect the movement, speed run levels, or finding new ways to toast yourself should keep it fresh. Some players might be turned off, however, after a few attempts due to hard learning curve and purposely frustrating controls.

Final Verdict – 7.5/10

I Am Bread is such a ridiculous, creative, and oddly compelling game that it relies on wacky physics and funny challenges. Although the awkward controls make it a frustrating experience, they really are part of it and create unpredictable adventure within each movement.

If you like games with weird names like Goat Simulator and Octodad: Dadliest Catch, I Am Bread takes you on a new ride where toasting bread becomes an absurd challenge of laughing out loud.
